Peter Huyakorn, Ph.D., BCEE President – A co-founder of HGL, Dr. Huyakorn has served as the company’s president and chief executive officer since 1987 and has established HGL as a nationally prominent small business that specializes in environmental remediation and water resource management services. A world-renowned expert in the development and application of groundwater/surface water and contaminant transport models, Dr. Huyakorn has more than 40 years of experience in hydrogeological evaluation, saltwater intrusion, subsurface contamination investigation, and site closure. He is a nationally and internationally prominent numerical modeling expert, with 160 technical publications to his credit.
Scott Schulein, PG, Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Mr. Schulein joined HGL in 2001 as Vice President of Engineering and Construction and became the company’s COO in 2009. He has overseen the expansion of HGL’s client base and diversification into new service lines. In addition, he has acted as program manager for hundreds of projects completed under contracts with the Department of Defense, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other federal, state, and private industry clients. These projects have covered the full scope of environmental restoration and construction services at Superfund sites and federal facilities; and projects funded under the Installation Restoration Program, FUDS, BRAC, MMRP, and FUSRAP. Growing up in Colorado, Mr. Schulein has always looked for balanced sustainable solutions when solving complex multidiscipline problems.
Cathy Nelson, CPCM, Senior Vice President – Ms. Nelson has been with HGL since 1997, and she has overseen the company’s Business Operations Department, which encompasses its accounting, contracts, human resources, and procurement functions, since 2005. She has over 25 years of contracting and accounting experience, and she has worked with a full range of government and commercial clients. As a Certified Professional Contracts Manager since 2001, Ms. Nelson has served as contracts administrator, negotiator, and point of contact for many of HGL’s large, multimillion dollar Department of Defense and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contracts. She also has extensive experience in meeting FAR/EPAAR/DFAR requirements and knowledge of government regulations pertaining to U.S. Government-furnished equipment/property.
Janardan Patel, PMP, Senior Vice President – Mr. Patel joined HGL in 2005 and manages HGL’s environmental investigation, engineering, construction, and munitions response programs. He has been managing environmental response programs for over 22 years and has overseen the full range of investigation and remedial activities on more than 180 projects at Installation Restoration Program, FUDS, BRAC, MMRP, and FUSRAP sites nationwide. Under Mr. Patel’s leadership on these programs, HGL has received numerous “Exceptional” performance ratings and commendations from its U.S. Government clients.
Mark Morris, Ph.D., Senior Vice President – Dr. Morris came to HGL in 2018 and is the company’s Director of Business Development. He is a civil/environmental engineer with over 30 years of experience in the environmental and engineering consulting industry, within the U.S. and internationally. He has served in various leadership roles with prominent industry firms, in both technical and business development capacities. Dr. Morris plays a leading role in developing business growth strategies and connecting these strategies to actions that lead to HGL’s continued growth and diversification.
